CHAPTER NINE

INTERROGATIONS

JUSTIN

The room they use as Kate’s jail cell is cold and dark. Everything is made of stone except for a small plexiglass window. Kate is sitting on a wooden bench attached to the back wall. When I walk in, she greets me with a smile.

“Like my new place?” she asks teasingly, nodding to her surroundings. She wears handcuffs on her wrists and shackles on her ankles and does not seem the least bit bothered by them.

The still air in the room suffocates me, and I try to take deep breaths through my nose and out my mouth. How is Kate so calm right now? This room is unnerving, which I am sure is the intention. Having such an uncomfortable interrogation room probably gets people to talk more quickly so they can get the heck out.

“Hi, Kate,” I say quietly, settling into a metal chair opposite her. I notice it’s bolted to the ground. I run my sweaty palms over my pants and take a deep breath.

After we arrived in the garage, Instructor Sanchez notified the school authorities. Ryan, Scarlet, and I made a plan that we would protect Kate—despite what she had done. She did not deserve death—if that indeed was the plan for her. The headmasters came along with some of the other teachers, and I had wondered why Kate, of all people, would warrant such a welcoming party. The entire time we waited for them to arrive, she had sat calmly in the back of the SUV, grinning through the window at us every once in a while. The eeriness of the interrogation room had nothing on Kate’s eerie smile.

But now, she is in a cell. Where she belongs. For a while, anyway.

“What’s the point?” I ask. “Why, Kate? Why did you . . .” I trail off, and a long silence lingers in the air between us. Finally, she stands up from the bench and moves toward me, keeping a respectful distance. She looks at me seriously. This is not the Kate I know.

“Everyone has a dark secret, Justin, but some aren’t ready to share it,” she says in a quiet voice, her eyes lowered. “But the time will come. I will know it. You will know it.”

“What? What are you talking about, Kate?” I ask her. What the heck is she talking about? “A dark secret? What does that mean? How will I know it? Talk to me,” I say urgently, leaning forward.

Kate considers me a moment and chews on her bottom lip. “If I tell you too early, this whole facility will be blown up with everyone inside it. And if I tell you too late, no cookies will be left to steal,” she says with a snicker then moves back to her bench, calmly taking her seat once again with a soft sigh.

What is that all about? Is this a freaking riddle? I blink a few times and shake my head. Blowing up the school sounds straightforward enough, but what the heck does
